{"id":6358,"date":"2026-07-13T13:05:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T07:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambdhaka.esteri.it\/?p=6358"},"modified":"2026-07-13T13:05:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T07:05:22","slug":"termination-of-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-from-august-3-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambdhaka.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dall_ambasciata\/2026\/07\/termination-of-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-from-august-3-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Termination of validity of paper identity cards for travel abroad from August 3, 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starting from 3 August 2026, paper identity cards will no longer be valid for international travel, regardless of the expiry date shown on the back of the card.<\/p>\n<p>Legislative Decree No. 108 of 26 June 2026 introduced several important changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A valid (unexpired) paper identity card may continue to be used as a means of identification when dealing with Italian Public Administration offices and providers of public services, including Italian Consulates.<\/li>\n<li>In urgent cases, Italian municipalities may issue a temporary identity document that is valid for international travel. This document cannot be renewed and is valid for no more than six months. Please note that some foreign countries may not accept this temporary document. Check the entry requirements for your destination on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viaggiaresicuri.it\/home\">Viaggiare Sicuri<\/a> website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contact the Embassy to find out how to apply for the new Electronic Identity Card (Carta d&#8217;Identit\u00e0 Elettronica \u2013 CIE): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/\">https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/<\/a>. Dedicated appointments are available for people who do not have any other identity documents.<\/p>\n<p>From 1 June 2026, Italian citizens residing abroad and registered with AIRE may also apply for an Electronic Identity Card (CIE) at any Italian municipality, as provided by Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026.
