The Undersecretary of State for Defense, Hon. Matteo Perego di Cremnago, accompanied by the Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Antonio Alessandro, paid an official visit to Bangladesh, during which he held a series of institutional meetings with government representatives and military leaders, aimed at strengthening bilateral dialogue between Italy and Bangladesh in the domains of defense and security.
During a cordial meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Undersecretary Perego stressed that “in the face of changing international scenarios, cooperation between nations that share a common vision of challenges and prospects in the field of defense and security is the key to effectively approaching the future, guaranteeing peace and stability in an area of growing strategic importance”.
With the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan, strategic issues were discussed in depth, including the importance of the Indo-Pacific region, which is central to future geopolitical balances. In this context, the Undersecretary reiterated that “peace, regional stability and freedom of navigation are essential prerequisites for ensuring the security of trade and energy flows”, while highlighting Italy’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations and dialogue with regional organisations.
During the meeting with General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Army Staff, possible forms of collaboration and synergy between the armed forces of the two countries were examined, with particular reference to the areas of personnel, training and the sharing of expertise.
Furthermore, Undersecretary Perego met with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan. On this occasion, the common desire to strengthen the partnership between Italy and Bangladesh in the defense and security sector was reiterated, as well as the importance of developing new forms of technological and industrial collaboration.
“Italy and Bangladesh share a common vision based on dialogue, trust and concrete cooperation”, said the Undersecretary, adding: “A partnership destined to strengthen further in order to contribute together to peace, stability and international security in a constantly evolving strategic context.”
