Contemporary dance met the tradition of Italian Opera yesterday at the National Theatre of the Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka, with an extraordinary performance by the Italian company Artemis Danza, directed by Monica Casadei. At the heart of the event was an exploration and celebration of the female figures in the operas of Puccini and Verdi, highlighting their strength, vitality, and sensuality.
The performance, funded by the Italian Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, was preceded by a masterclass with over thirty students from three dance schools of the Capital — Shadhona, Katthakiya, and Nrityanandan — who later took part in the show.
The elegant movements of the seven dancers, set to the unforgettable music of Giacomo Puccini (Turandot, Madama Butterfly, Tosca) and Giuseppe Verdi (La Traviata), captivated a large audience of both local and international spectators.
Special thanks to the Ministry of Culture of Bangladesh for providing the Country’s main theatre, and in particular to Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Honorable Adviser to the Ministry of Culture, for attending and opening the evening as Chief Guest.
